Katy Perry called out for ‘mom-shaming’ during American Idol audition

A mom of three who auditioned on the “American Idol” show said she was embarrassed and hurt by comments made by pop star judge Katy Perry.

Sarah Beth Liebe told judges that she was 25 years old, which prompted them to compliment her for looking far younger, but they appeared shocked when she said she was also the mother of three children. Perry acted stunned by the information, stood up, and turned away from Liebe in disbelief.

“If Katy lays on the table,” Liebe said, “I think I’m going to pass out.”

“Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much,” she responded.

Perry accused Liebe of not wanting to win enough and interrupted her during the bizarre audition, telling her the first song she sang was not enough.

The mom responded to the weird exchange in a video on her personal TikTok account.

“It was embarrassing to have that on TV,” said Liebe in the video. “It was hurtful. I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool and I think that mom-shaming is super lame. I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”

“I also wanted to take this opportunity to say I see all of the young moms and just moms in general,” she continued, “keep loving your babies. Nobody deserves to feel crappy about that. I think that if you’re a good mama and you love your babies, that’s all that really matters. Other comments just don’t feel necessary.”

Despite the weird interaction, Perry approved Liebe for the next round. Luke Perry enthusiastically supported her while Lionel Ritchie voted no.

Sarah Beth Liebe, a 25-year-old mother of three, experienced embarrassment and hurt when she was judged on the popular show “American Idol”. Upon disclosing her age and the fact that she had three children, Katy Perry, one of the show’s judges, was visibly shocked and stood up and turned away from her in disbelief. Liebe, feeling overwhelmed, joked about fainting and to this, Perry responded by saying, “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much”. Perry then proceeded to accuse Liebe of not wanting to win enough and interrupted her during her audition, telling her that her first song was not enough.

Liebe took to her TikTok account to share her feelings regarding the strange exchange, saying that it was embarrassing and hurtful. She also mentioned that mom-shaming was not cool, and that it was hard enough to be a mother and a woman. She ended her video with a message of support to all mothers, telling them to keep loving their babies and that if they were a good mother, that was all that mattered.

Although the interaction was strange, Perry approved Liebe for the next round, with Luke Perry being the only judge who enthusiastically supported her; Lionel Ritchie voting no.
