PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A 41-year-old man allegedly shot his 36-year-old wife and then himself during a domestic dispute inside a vehicle on North Broad Street Wednesday afternoon, leaving both adults hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
Philadelphia police responded at about 2:49 p.m. Sept. 9 to the 2900 block of North Broad Street near West Glenwood Avenue after reports of a double shooting. Officers found the woman suffering from two gunshot wounds, while the man had what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both were taken to Temple University Hospital.
Police transported the woman to the hospital, while SEPTA Transit Police took the man for emergency treatment. Authorities said both patients were listed in critical condition in the latest reports available after the shooting. Their names had not been publicly released.
Police told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the two people were husband and wife and that the shooting happened inside a Volvo on Broad Street. Authorities described the incident as a domestic dispute. Investigators recovered a gun from the scene, but police had not publicly identified a motive or released a complete account of what happened before the shooting.
Witnesses told Action News that an argument occurred near or inside a black Volvo shortly before gunfire was heard. The witness account was consistent with reports that investigators were treating the shooting as a dispute between the two adults, although police had not released additional details about what prompted the confrontation.
The gunfire also affected another vehicle nearby. Action News reported that a black SUV carrying a child was struck by gunfire and its rear window shattered. Police said the child was not hit by a bullet but suffered minor injuries from broken glass. The child received medical treatment and was expected to recover. No other injuries tied to the shooting were reported.
The shooting occurred during the afternoon along a busy stretch of North Broad Street. Police remained at the scene while investigators documented evidence and worked to determine the sequence of events. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Shooting Investigation Group was handling the investigation.
