Surveillance footage shows gunfire erupting near a Family Dollar before the wounded driver crossed a busy roadway and crashed into a tree.
DALLAS, Texas — Dallas police are investigating the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Terron Williams, who was struck by gunfire while driving near a Lake Highlands shopping center Monday before his car crossed Walnut Hill Lane and crashed into a tree.
The shooting happened at about 12:20 p.m. Sept. 7 near Plano Road and Walnut Hill Lane, according to preliminary police information. Investigators said unknown suspects fired at Williams while he was driving. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded after the crash and pronounced him dead at the scene. No arrests have been announced, and police have not disclosed a possible motive or publicly identified the people responsible.
Surveillance cameras at businesses near the intersection captured portions of the shooting and its aftermath. Video aired by local television stations showed a white vehicle moving through the parking lot as gunfire erupted. Another angle appeared to show a white SUV arriving shortly before a person in dark clothing emerged and fired toward the car. Police have not publicly confirmed how many people fired weapons or said whether the SUV seen in the footage belonged to a suspect.
A manager at the Family Dollar told FOX 4 that Williams had entered the store around noon, made a purchase and returned to his vehicle before the shooting. The manager’s account placed Williams at the shopping center only minutes before the gunfire. Police have not said what happened immediately before the attack or whether Williams had any known interaction with the shooter or shooters.
The white car accelerated through the parking area as shots continued, according to surveillance footage broadcast by FOX 4. The vehicle went over a curb, crossed Walnut Hill Lane and eventually struck a tree near a business on the opposite side of the road. Video from another nearby business reviewed by NBC 5 also showed the car moving across the lot after the shooting.
The incident brought a large police response to the commercial area in the middle of the Labor Day holiday. Walnut Hill Lane was blocked for hours while officers examined the shooting scene and the area surrounding the crashed vehicle. News crews reported numerous evidence markers in the Family Dollar parking lot. The car believed to have been driven by Williams also showed multiple apparent bullet impacts.
Landry Honeycutt, who lives near the intersection, told NBC 5 that he was in his garage when he heard a rapid series of gunshots. When he opened his gate afterward, he saw that the victim’s vehicle had crossed the street, he said. Emergency vehicles began arriving soon afterward. Police collected surveillance footage from businesses in the area as investigators worked to establish the sequence of events.
The shooting was one of several homicides investigated by Dallas police during the Labor Day weekend. A summary of preliminary department information published by DFW Scanner said officers handled four separate fatal shooting investigations between Sept. 6 and late Sept. 7. Authorities have not indicated that the shooting involving Williams was connected to any of the other cases.
Early reports did not identify Williams because authorities had not yet publicly released the victim’s name. Subsequent local reports identified him as a 33-year-old man. Police have released little information about the circumstances behind the killing and have not said whether investigators believe Williams was deliberately targeted or whether there was another event that led to the shooting.
Investigators also have not publicly announced a description of the suspected shooter or shooters, said whether a firearm has been recovered or disclosed how many vehicles may have been involved. The police investigation remains preliminary, and authorities have not announced any criminal charges in connection with Williams’ death.
The homicide is being investigated under Dallas police case No. 132059-2026. Detective A. Joslin has been assigned to the investigation. As of Tuesday evening, police had announced no arrest and had not publicly established a motive for the shooting.
