A Florida man, 72-year-old Hureleyon McLean, tragically lost his life on Thanksgiving Day following a disagreement over loud music. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into the incident, but the identity of the alleged shooter has not yet been revealed.
The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. on Somerset Drive in Lauderdale Lakes, a location approximately 32 miles north of Miami. The Broward County Regional Communications received reports of gunfire in the area. As per the initial radio transmissions from first responders, which were cited by The South Florida Sun Sentinel, McLean was shot in the head by the alleged shooter, who remained outside a room with the weapon still in his hand.
Upon reaching the scene, deputies found McLean with a gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene. The alleged shooter was taken into custody by deputies and cooperated with detectives, asserting that he acted in self-defense. The Sheriff’s Office has stated that the case will be forwarded to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
Rose McLean, the wife of the victim, shared her account of the incident with various media outlets. She stated that her husband was playing music during their Thanksgiving Day celebration when the neighbor complained about the loud volume. Her husband went to discuss the issue with the neighbor, and shortly after, she heard a gunshot.
Upon rushing to the door, Rose found her husband lying face down in a pool of blood. She also saw the alleged shooter standing nearby, still holding his gun. When she confronted him, asking why he shot her husband, the man allegedly threatened to shoot her as well if she didn’t remain quiet.
Rose McLean has expressed doubts about the shooter’s claim of self-defense. She stated that her husband was unarmed at the time of the incident, not even carrying a knife.
