Former ‘Today’ Show Host Bryant Gumbel Hospitalized

Bryant Gumbel, the iconic broadcaster, was reportedly taken to the hospital on Monday evening following a medical crisis at his residence in Manhattan. The 77-year-old former co-host of the “Today” show was transported from his home on a stretcher and remained in the hospital on Tuesday, according to sources. The specifics of his condition and the nature of his treatment remain undisclosed.

Despite the uncertainty, a family member has reassured that Gumbel is in stable condition. Gumbel, who retired from his illustrious broadcasting career in 2023, had previously fought a battle with lung cancer in 2009.

Gumbel attributed his cancer diagnosis to his heavy smoking habit during his youth, consuming up to three packs a day. As part of his aggressive treatment, a portion of his lung was surgically removed.

Gumbel’s broadcasting career spanned several decades, with a significant portion of it spent on the NBC morning show, where he was a mainstay for 15 years from 1982 to 1997. He also hosted HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” until the show concluded two years ago.

Gumbel’s family has faced its share of health challenges. His older brother, Greg Gumbel, a renowned sports broadcaster in his own right, passed away in December 2024 at the age of 78 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Greg Gumbel was a familiar face at all March Madness tournaments and had the honor of calling two Super Bowls during his career.

The Gumbel family has yet to release a statement regarding Bryant Gumbel’s current health situation. As fans and colleagues await further updates, they reflect on the significant impact both Gumbel brothers have had on the broadcasting industry.
