IBIZA, Spain — British model and social media personality Demi Rose Mawby, once one of Instagram’s most visible stars, has largely stepped away from the online spotlight and is living a quieter life in Ibiza after years shaped by the deaths of both of her parents.
Recent reports have renewed interest in Mawby, 31, after her once-active social media presence became largely dormant. Friends and people familiar with her life have described a routine centered on yoga, meditation, spirituality and caring for animals. Her representatives have indicated that the break is not necessarily permanent and that she could return to social media, although no timetable has been announced.
Mawby rose to prominence during Instagram’s early influencer era, building an audience that eventually numbered in the millions. She became known for modeling photographs, travel images and fashion work and also appeared in magazines and music videos. Her online following turned her into an international social media personality long before influencer marketing became as established as it is today.
Her public life was accompanied by major personal losses. Mawby’s father, Barrie Mawby, died from cancer in October 2018. Her mother, Christine Mawby, died in June 2019, months after her husband’s death. Mawby later said her mother had been disabled following a heart attack and that she had spent years helping care for her while she was growing up.
In a 2020 interview with The Standard, Mawby spoke openly about the effect the losses had on her. She said the deaths left her dealing with anger, sadness and loneliness, while meditation, spirituality and support from people around her helped her cope. She also said that speaking publicly about grief had become important to her because she hoped her experience could help others dealing with loss.
Mawby moved to Ibiza after spending the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic in London. In that 2020 interview, she said isolation during lockdown had been difficult for her mental health and described moving to the Spanish island as one of the best decisions she had made. At the time, she said Ibiza offered friends, warmer weather and a setting that also worked well for her modeling career.
Her relationship with the island appears to have changed along with her public profile. An Ibiza Style profile published in 2024 described Mawby as living in a tranquil setting away from the nightlife that had first attracted her to the island. The profile focused on her interest in spirituality and presented a more private side of the model than the glamorous image associated with her social media career.
That 2024 profile also complicates descriptions that Mawby simply “vanished” from public view. Although her regular social media activity declined sharply and recent reporting says she withdrew from the online presence that made her famous, she did not disappear entirely. She participated in the Ibiza Style feature and continued to be known in the community where she lives. The more accurate picture is one of a major retreat from constant online exposure rather than a complete disappearance.
Recent accounts place Mawby near Santa Gertrudis, a village in central Ibiza known for a quieter atmosphere than the island’s major nightlife areas. Reports say she has spent time caring for cats and helping with efforts to find homes for stray animals. Those descriptions have led some outlets to characterize her new life in colorful terms, but the confirmed details point more broadly to a shift toward privacy, animals and spiritual interests.
The timing of Mawby’s reduced online activity has also generated speculation about whether grief directly caused her withdrawal. Mawby has previously discussed how deeply the deaths of her parents affected her and how those experiences influenced her outlook on life. However, she continued working and maintaining a public profile for years after their deaths, making it difficult to reduce her later decision to step back from social media to a single event or explanation.
For now, Mawby remains largely removed from the regular posting schedule that once made her a constant presence on Instagram. Recent reports say her representatives expect her to return to social media at some point, but no date or specific project has been announced. Her current life in Ibiza appears to remain centered on privacy and the quieter routine she has built away from daily online attention.
