College Student Found Dead in Campus Dorm Room

Authorities identified the 18-year-old math student as Amir Eftekhar and said there were no indications of foul play in his death.

IRVINE, Calif. — An 18-year-old UC Irvine student was found dead in campus housing Sunday, prompting an investigation and an outpouring of concern among students as university officials pushed back against online claims that his death was connected to Southern California’s recent extreme heat.

Amir Eftekhar was found dead around 2 p.m. Oct. 4, according to information provided by the Orange County Coroner’s Office. Eftekhar was a sophomore majoring in mathematics and lived in UC Irvine’s Mesa Court housing community. Authorities later determined that his death was a suicide. Officials said there was no evidence of foul play.

Residents of Mesa Court received a message Sunday notifying them that a member of the housing community had died. The university said Eftekhar’s family had been notified and expressed condolences to those affected by his death. UC Irvine did not immediately release extensive details about the circumstances, leaving students with limited information as word of the death spread across campus and social media.

Early reports about Eftekhar’s death prompted speculation online that the high temperatures affecting Orange County might have played a role. UC Irvine spokesperson Tom Vasich rejected that claim. He said information suggesting the death was heat-related was incorrect and that officials had found no indication of suspicious activity surrounding the student’s death.

The distinction became significant because UC Irvine was under a high heat advisory at the time. The university said the advisory was in effect from Oct. 2 through Oct. 7 and made campus cooling centers available. Campus operations otherwise continued normally. Officials have not connected those weather conditions to Eftekhar’s death.

Initial reporting Monday said authorities were still investigating and had released few details about how or where Eftekhar was found. Additional information released Tuesday established the manner of death as suicide. That later finding clarified the circumstances after the university had already said there were no signs of foul play.

Mesa Court is one of UC Irvine’s major residential communities. News of Eftekhar’s death spread quickly among students, particularly as conflicting claims appeared online before authorities released additional findings. The university urged the campus community to rely on confirmed information while officials worked to establish the facts surrounding the death.

Authorities have not publicly identified evidence suggesting another person was responsible for Eftekhar’s death. The university and Orange County officials also have not released information establishing what may have preceded it. As of Wednesday, the official findings remained that Eftekhar died by suicide and that no suspicious activity was connected to the death.
