Father, Son Dead After Police Enter Home

Police said the case began as a domestic violence call near Reems and Greenway roads.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Two men died Saturday evening after Surprise police responded to a domestic violence call, entered a home near Reems and Greenway roads and fatally shot a son before finding his father dead inside, authorities said.

The case is under review by the Glendale Police Department under West Valley Investigative Response Team protocols. Surprise police said officers were called after reports of an argument and gunfire inside the home. No officers were injured, and police said there was no continuing threat to the community.

Officers responded at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a family member reported trouble at the house, police said. Surprise Police Sgt. Rick Hernandez said a father and son had been arguing and that multiple shots were fired before officers arrived. “When our officers arrived, they made entry, and that is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a statement. The son was struck by police gunfire and died at the scene.

Police later found the father dead inside the home. Authorities had not released either man’s name or age as of Sunday. They also had not said how the father died, whether the son was armed when officers entered, how many officers fired or what officers saw in the moments before the shooting. Investigators were expected to review evidence from inside the home, dispatch records, witness statements and any available police video.

The shooting happened in a residential area of Surprise, a West Valley city northwest of Phoenix. Police closed off the area while investigators worked at the scene. The case drew attention because it involved both a reported family dispute and a police shooting in the same response. ABC15 reported it was the first officer-involved shooting in Surprise this year and the second such shooting in the Valley that week.

Glendale police will lead the outside investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Surprise police also are expected to conduct an internal review. No criminal charges had been announced because both people involved in the reported domestic dispute were dead. Officials said the sequence of events before officers entered the home remained under investigation.

Neighbors saw police vehicles and crime scene tape near the home Saturday evening as officers kept people away from the property. Authorities said the investigation was still in its early stages and that more information could be released after relatives are notified and initial findings are reviewed.

The case remained under investigation Sunday. The next major update is expected when authorities identify the father and son or release more details on what led to the shooting.
