Teen Kills Mom and Critically Injures Dad

Authorities say the 17-year-old is being charged as an adult after a deadly domestic attack in Baldwin County.

DAPHNE, Ala. — A 17-year-old Alabama boy is charged as an adult after authorities said he stabbed both of his parents, killing his mother and critically injuring his father during a domestic dispute Sunday night.

The attack left Samantha Baker, 37, dead and her husband, Lance Baker, 46, hospitalized after a violent scene that stretched from inside the family home into the surrounding neighborhood. Authorities said the teen faces charges of murder and attempted murder. His bond was set at $1 million after an initial court appearance. Investigators have described the case as an isolated domestic incident, but many details remain under review, including the full timeline and what happened before deputies arrived.

Deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday to a home on Augustine Drive in the Daphne area, east of Mobile. Authorities said the family had been involved in an argument over discipline before the teen allegedly got a kitchen knife and attacked his parents. Samantha Baker was pronounced dead at the scene. Lance Baker was critically injured and flown to a hospital for treatment. Sheriff’s officials said the teen later barricaded himself inside the home and called 911. Deputies arrested him without incident after they arrived. “This was an isolated domestic incident,” authorities said in an early account of the case.

Investigators said the stabbing began inside the home and continued outside as the victims tried to escape. Lance Baker was able to get away from the house and seek help from neighbors, according to accounts from nearby residents and reports describing surveillance footage from the neighborhood. One neighbor said video showed him moving from door to door while badly wounded. Several neighbors were not home at the time, delaying help in the quiet residential area. Samantha Baker was found outside with multiple stab wounds. Authorities have not released the teen’s name in all official accounts because of his age, though reports have identified him as the Bakers’ eldest son.

The couple’s younger son was not home during the attack, authorities said. The family lived in the Belforest community, a residential area in Baldwin County near Daphne. The crime scene covered more than the home itself because the violence moved into nearby yards and doorsteps. Investigators collected evidence from the house and surrounding properties, including areas where the injured father tried to get help. Authorities have not said how many times each victim was stabbed, whether the knife was recovered at the scene or whether any prior police calls had been made to the home. The sheriff’s office has said the investigation remains active.

Samantha Baker was remembered by relatives and friends as a mother, veteran and real estate professional. Lance Baker also has military ties and was identified in reports as a U.S. Army Reserve battalion commander. The couple’s background as military veterans became part of the public account as friends and neighbors reacted to the killing. Residents described the neighborhood as a place where such violence was not expected. One neighbor said she had heard a loud argument before the attack, but authorities have not confirmed every detail of the reported dispute. Investigators have said the immediate conflict involved discipline, while later reports also described tensions over family and social media issues.

The teen is being prosecuted as an adult, a step that raises the stakes in the case and moves it outside the usual privacy limits of many juvenile matters. He is charged with murder in his mother’s death and attempted murder in the stabbing of his father. The $1 million bond was set after a Monday court appearance. No trial date has been announced. Prosecutors and investigators are expected to review physical evidence, 911 audio, statements from the surviving victim, neighbor video and forensic reports before the case moves further through court. Additional filings may clarify the charges and the evidence authorities say supports them.

Authorities have not released a full medical update on Lance Baker beyond reports that he was critically injured and later described as stable. His condition is central to the attempted murder case and may also help investigators reconstruct the attack. Detectives are expected to rely on his account if he is able to provide one, along with video from nearby homes and statements from neighbors who heard or saw parts of the incident. The teen’s 911 call also may become an important piece of evidence. Officials have not said what he told dispatchers or how long he remained inside the home before deputies took him into custody.

The case has drawn wide attention because of the severity of the alleged family violence and the ages of those involved. Reports from the neighborhood described a chaotic scene, with the injured father pleading for help as residents realized something more serious than a domestic argument had happened. The killing also left friends and relatives grieving Samantha Baker while Lance Baker remained in medical care. Authorities have not described a broader threat to the public. They also have not said whether any mental health history, prior conflict or other warning signs are part of the investigation.

As of Thursday, the teen remained charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder, and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office continued investigating the fatal stabbing. The next major steps are expected in court as prosecutors file more records and investigators complete forensic work tied to the Sunday night attack.
