Daryl Alexander Hill had just taken his 10-year-old daughter to school when authorities say he encountered a violent roadside confrontation.
APOPKA, Fla. — A 56-year-old Florida father was fatally shot Tuesday morning after authorities say he stopped to help during a roadside fight shortly after dropping his daughter off for her first day of school.
Daryl Alexander Hill died following the Aug. 11 shooting near Plymouth Sorrento Road and West Ponkan Road in the Apopka area, northwest of Orlando. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Hill encountered a man and woman who had been fighting inside a vehicle before a crash and continued their confrontation outside. Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in Hill’s death. The charge is an allegation, and the case remains pending.
Deputies were called to the intersection at about 8:30 a.m. after reports of a physical fight. Authorities said the confrontation had begun inside a vehicle and contributed to a crash. Hill, who had recently dropped his 10-year-old daughter off at Wolf Lake Elementary School, came upon the scene while heading home. Investigators said he stopped after seeing someone who appeared to be in distress.
According to accounts of the arrest affidavit, Hill attempted to intervene as Vazquez and the woman confronted each other. A physical struggle followed, involving Hill and the other two people. Witnesses told investigators that Hill eventually emerged from bushes near the roadway with his hands raised and tried to move away from the confrontation. Authorities allege Vazquez then obtained a firearm and shot Hill. Emergency crews took Hill to a hospital, where he died.
Vazquez gave investigators a different account of how the confrontation began, saying Hill attacked him first, according to reports citing the affidavit. Witnesses, however, described Hill as unarmed and attempting to leave before the shooting. The sheriff’s office has publicly described Hill as a bystander who was trying to help someone in distress. Prosecutors will have to prove the criminal allegation against Vazquez in court.
The shooting happened as families were traveling through the area on the first day of school. Ryan Harper told WKMG-TV that he was driving with his wife and children when traffic backed up near the intersection. He said they heard a loud bang and later saw a person lying in the roadway. Harper said the scene was traumatic for families who encountered it while taking children to school that morning.
Hill’s relatives said his decision to stop and help reflected the way he treated people throughout his life. His son, Damon Hill, described his father as loving, caring and nonjudgmental. Family members said Hill was a father of three, including two adult children and the 10-year-old daughter he had taken to school shortly before the shooting. Friends also remembered him for his humor, outgoing personality and willingness to help others.
Hill was also known in the Wolf Lake Elementary School community. Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Maria Vazquez described him as someone who brought energy to those around him and was willing to assist when needed. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to Hill’s family, saying he lost his life after stepping in when he believed another person needed help.
Court records and local reporting show Raul Vazquez was already free on bond in a separate aggravated assault case when Hill was killed. A judge later ordered him held without bond on the second-degree murder charge and revoked his bond in the earlier case. The State Attorney’s Office has emphasized that an arrest does not amount to a conviction and that each criminal case must be evaluated on its evidence, witnesses and applicable law.
Vazquez remained in custody as the case moved forward. Court records cited by PEOPLE listed a hearing for Aug. 17. Authorities have not publicly established a motive beyond the confrontation described by investigators, and further details about the shooting are expected to be addressed through the continuing criminal proceedings.
