The May 7 sailing of Disney Adventure ended before departure after a technical issue kept the ship in port.
SINGAPORE — Disney Cruise Line canceled a four-night voyage from Singapore after passengers had already boarded its new Disney Adventure ship, leaving families to disembark after a technical problem kept the vessel from leaving port.
The canceled May 7-11 sailing drew attention because it involved Disney’s newest and largest cruise ship, a vessel built for the company’s first major year-round cruise operation in Asia. Disney said guests would receive refunds, hotel support, flight-change help and a future cruise discount.
The Disney Adventure was scheduled to leave Marina Bay Cruise Centre on May 7 for a four-night cruise to nowhere, a round-trip voyage from Singapore with no port calls. Passengers boarded and settled into cabins, but the ship remained docked as crews worked on what Disney later described as a mechanical or technical issue. Guests spent about one night aboard before the cruise line told them the voyage would not continue. “We are truly sorry to let you know that we are unable to proceed with your Disney Adventure experience from May 7-11, 2026, as planned,” Disney Cruise Line said in a notice given to guests.
Disney did not give passengers a detailed public explanation of the problem in the guest notice. A Disney spokesperson said the ship remained in Singapore while teams addressed a mechanical issue and that the problem could not be resolved in the time needed to begin the trip. The company apologized and said it was working directly with affected guests. Reports from passengers described confusion after the delayed departure, followed by an announcement that the sailing was canceled. Some guests posted online that they had traveled internationally with children and had to change flights, hotel stays and school or work plans after the decision.
The company’s compensation package included a 100% refund of the cruise fare and refunds for unused onboard services, including internet and beverage packages. Disney also offered guests 50% off a future Disney cruise, complimentary Wi-Fi while they remained aboard, a pre-arranged one-night hotel stay at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, shuttle transportation from the terminal to the hotel, coverage for potential flight change fees and up to $500 per stateroom for other incidentals. Disney’s refund FAQ said refunds would be issued to the original form of payment within five to seven working days after cancellation, though timing could depend on banks or travel providers.
Guests were told to prepare their luggage for disembarkation, with groups called according to luggage tag assignments. Disney said more instructions on claims for related expenses would be shared later. The company’s notice said guest safety and comfort were the top priority and that “every decision has been made with you in mind.” The sudden cancellation still left many passengers facing an immediate scramble in Singapore, especially those who had booked the sailing as part of a longer vacation. Online reaction was mixed, with some praising the refund and hotel package and others saying a partial future discount did not fully cover the disruption.
The Disney Adventure is a 208,000-gross-ton ship and the largest vessel in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet. It entered service from Singapore in March after an earlier debut was delayed from late 2025 because of shipbuilding delays. The ship is designed for three- and four-night sailings from Singapore and is central to Disney’s push into the Asia-Pacific cruise market. Its launch was promoted as a major step for Disney Cruise Line because it is the company’s first ship based in Asia. The vessel includes themed areas tied to Disney, Pixar and Marvel stories, along with family entertainment, restaurants and youth spaces.
The cancellation came less than two months after the ship’s maiden voyage, raising questions among passengers about whether the issue was a one-time mechanical problem or part of a rough early rollout. Disney has not publicly identified the specific system involved. Cruise industry reports said the May 11 sailing was expected to proceed, and later reports said the Disney Adventure returned to service after the technical issue was addressed. Disney’s travel advisory page showed no active advisories Monday, while the company continued directing impacted guests to refund and assistance information.
For Singapore, the ship is part of a high-profile tourism bet tied to family travel and regional cruising. The Marina Bay Cruise Centre has become the home base for the Disney Adventure’s short sailings, which are aimed at passengers from Singapore and nearby countries as well as long-haul visitors. The cancellation was unusual because guests had already boarded, spent time in cabins and used onboard services before being told the cruise would end at the pier. Disney said unused services would be refunded, and the company’s notice thanked guests for their “patience, understanding and cooperation.”
The Disney Adventure was back in service by Monday, May 11, according to reports. Disney Cruise Line had not announced a wider suspension of the ship’s schedule, and the refund process for the canceled sailing remained the next milestone for affected guests.
