Dad Killed 6-Year-Old in His Playroom, Claimed He ‘Hit Himself’

Franklin Elmore Jr., a 29-year-old Indiana resident, has pleaded guilty to the murder of his six-year-old son, Justin. Elmore Jr. and his wife, Cheyenne Elmore, 27, were arrested in August following the death of the child, who succumbed to injuries inflicted by his father in his playroom. Both the father and stepmother were charged with murder, with Elmore Jr. entering a guilty plea last month.

During a court hearing on October 9, Elmore Jr. confessed to killing his son. He stated that he “did not mean it” when asked to confirm that he had physically assaulted his son, leading to his death. The couple had previously called 911 on the night of August 3, claiming that Justin had become unresponsive after an attack by his father. They told authorities that the boy had behavioral issues and would often hit himself in the head.

Upon arrival at the hospital, medical staff discovered that Justin had sustained a traumatic brain injury and a punctured lung. The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office reported that the medical staff concluded these injuries could not have been self-inflicted.

Investigations into the Elmores’ conduct revealed a pattern of excessive disciplinary measures, including physical punishment with a belt or hand and prolonged periods of physical exercise. Prosecutors noted that Cheyenne Elmore had expressed frustration to her husband about Justin’s behavior.

A search of the Elmores’ phones reportedly uncovered several photos of Justin with visible bruises and other injuries. Justin’s biological mother, Miranda McBride, had previously attempted to report the alleged abuse to Indiana authorities. However, she was reportedly told that they could not intervene as they found no evidence of bruising.

Cheyenne Elmore has pleaded not guilty to her murder charge and is set to stand trial in February 2026. She is due in court on December 18. Despite claims by Franklin Elmore and his attorney of a blanket plea agreement with prosecutors, Elkhart County Prosecutor Vicki Becker denied making any such agreements. Online records indicate that Elmore Jr.’s trial has been canceled, and he is slated for sentencing on November 25.
