Six years ago, a young boy from Minnesota experienced a life-altering event when he was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America. Landen Hoffmann, who was only five at the time, was randomly picked up and tossed over the railing by a disturbed individual. The fall, nearly 40 feet, resulted in severe injuries including a broken skull, facial fractures, and broken arms and a leg.
The assailant, 24-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, later confessed to the police that he was driven by anger over rejection from women and was “looking for someone to kill.” Despite the horrific incident, Landen survived and embarked on a long journey to recovery.
Today, Landen’s mother, Kari Hoffmann, reports that her son, now 11, is thriving. “It was a big, long journey,” she said. “So many miracles happened.” Landen’s recovery was a process that took more than three years, largely due to an injury to his frontal lobe sustained in the fall.
Kari observed her son’s personality shift from sweet to angry before he eventually returned to his cheerful self. “It took time for him to be back to him… He had to learn who he was again,” she explained. Landen spent four months in intensive care, underwent more than a dozen surgeries, and endured years of physical rehabilitation.
Despite the traumatic event, Landen does not recall the fall. Recently, he and his mother visited the hospital where he spent those challenging months in 2019. They brought annotated copies of a book Kari wrote about their experience, titled “Miracle at the Mall,” as gifts for the nurses who cared for Landen.
The incident occurred in April 2019 when Kari took Landen and a friend to the mall after a parent-teacher conference. She noticed a stranger, later identified as Aranda, speaking to the boys just moments before the life-altering incident. Aranda was subsequently sentenced to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder in 2019.
