Body of Grandmother Found in Heatless Home

The tragic demise of a 97-year-old Colorado woman, Corrye Brewer, whose body was discovered in January, has been declared a homicide by the county coroner. Disturbingly, a member of her own family may be implicated in her death. Brewer was reported missing by her family on January 25, prompting a senior alert from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Brewer, who suffered from cognitive impairment that could affect her memory, was particularly vulnerable, especially given the harsh winter conditions.

Two days after her disappearance, human remains were discovered near an intersection in Calhan, Colorado. The body was later confirmed to be Brewer’s. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office released its report on Brewer’s autopsy on April 9, categorizing her death as a homicide. The report, as obtained by local CBS affiliate KKTV, stated that Brewer died from hypothermia after being “intentionally left in the cold without any means to return home, seek adequate shelter, or call for help.”

The coroner’s findings, as reported by KKTV, suggested that Brewer had been left at an unoccupied house in the area by her own daughter. The elderly woman was reportedly abandoned without her walker or phone. The weather conditions on the night of January 24, when Brewer was allegedly left at the house, were harsh, with snow showers and temperatures dropping to as low as 16 degrees Fahrenheit. Brewer’s body was found on the same property days later, as reported by KXRM.

Brewer’s surviving family members have spoken out about the situation. KCNC, a local CBS affiliate, reported on the family’s internal strife, including issues with the relatives Brewer had been living with at the time. Brewer’s granddaughter, Shari Robinson, expressed the family’s desire for answers, stating, “We just want it brought out to the light. She is gone, and we hope that someone would take the time to provide answers for the family.”

As of now, no charges have been filed in Brewer’s death. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the case, which is set to be reviewed by the District Attorney, as reported by KKTV.
