James Edward McDaniel was returning to his vehicle when gunfire erupted across a busy Gainesville parking lot, police said.
GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Police are searching for those responsible for gunfire that killed 81-year-old James Edward McDaniel as he left a Walmart in Gainesville, where investigators say the Navy veteran was an innocent bystander caught in violence involving other people.
McDaniel, of Lula, was struck shortly after 7 p.m. Oct. 14 in the parking lot of the Walmart at 400 Shallowford Road NW. Emergency crews took him in critical condition to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later died. Gainesville police said their preliminary investigation found that McDaniel was not involved in the dispute that led to the shooting.
Investigators said McDaniel had finished shopping and was traveling toward his vehicle on a motorized mobility scooter when shots were fired across the parking lot. Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook said multiple people were present during the gunfire and investigators were working to determine who witnessed the shooting and who might have been involved. Authorities have not publicly released a complete account of what caused the confrontation.
Police said the distance between McDaniel and the person who fired the shot that struck him was substantial. In a later report, investigators said McDaniel was at least 130 yards from the shooter. The finding reinforced investigators’ conclusion that he was an uninvolved bystander going about an ordinary shopping trip when he was struck.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted Gainesville police with processing the large crime scene. Officers closed the Walmart and the surrounding area while investigators examined the parking lot and gathered evidence. Walmart said it was cooperating with law enforcement and said the safety of its customers and employees was a priority.
As investigators worked to identify those involved, police had not announced an arrest or released a description of a suspected shooter. Authorities also had not publicly disclosed how many people fired weapons or what started the dispute. Police said a number of people were in the parking lot when the shooting occurred, leaving detectives to sort potential witnesses from possible persons of interest.
McDaniel’s family said he was a Navy veteran who served during the Vietnam War and later spent years working for the U.S. Postal Service. His son, Ted McDaniel, described him as a devoted father. McDaniel is survived by his wife and four children, according to family members interviewed by local news organizations.
His wife, Gloria McDaniel, said the couple had been married for more than 50 years and that her husband routinely handled shopping for their household. Family members said he had served as a senior chief in the Navy and remained known by that title to many people who knew him. His death turned what relatives described as a routine trip to the store into a sudden loss for the family.
The killing also prompted a public appeal from Gainesville police for information from people who were at the Walmart or might know who was involved. Investigators said the crowded parking lot contained numerous vehicles and shoppers when the gunfire occurred, making witness accounts and other evidence important as detectives reconstruct the shooting.
Police continued searching for the person or people responsible as of Oct. 17. No arrest had been publicly announced, and investigators had not released a motive or a full description of the events that led to the gunfire. Local, state and other law enforcement partners were assisting as the investigation continued.
