Safety Tyler Ulrich, 21, spent five days hospitalized after being injured during an Oct. 10 road game in Arkansas.
BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene University football player Tyler Ulrich died Oct. 15, five days after suffering what the university described as a traumatic injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas. Ulrich, a 21-year-old sophomore safety, had remained hospitalized following the Oct. 10 game.
Ulrich’s death prompted Southern Nazarene to cancel its scheduled Oct. 17 game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University and brought an outpouring of condolences from teammates, coaches and the communities connected to the Texas native. The university has not publicly released detailed information about the circumstances of the injury or an official cause of death.
Ulrich was injured while Southern Nazarene was playing Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The game was delayed as medical personnel attended to him before he was taken to a hospital. Southern Nazarene officials said Monday that Ulrich remained in critical condition and was being closely monitored, with his family at the hospital and coaches and athletic administrators staying in contact with them.
The Oct. 10 game was played at Cliff Harris Stadium in Arkadelphia. Southern Nazarene’s official box score lists Ulrich as a starting safety and shows that Ouachita Baptist won 49-14. The game began at noon and lasted just over three hours. Ulrich recorded three tackles, including a shared tackle for loss, before the game ended, according to published game statistics.
Southern Nazarene President Keith Newman said Ulrich had been surrounded during his hospitalization by his family, teammates and close friends. After his death, the university said the loss was being felt across its campus and expressed support for Ulrich’s family, friends, teammates and others who knew him. The school had held a campuswide prayer gathering earlier in the week while he remained hospitalized.
Head football coach Dustin Hada also remembered Ulrich for his faith, work ethic and quiet strength. The tributes followed days of concern among students, teammates and supporters as Ulrich remained hospitalized after the game. The university said counseling and grief support were available to members of the campus community after his death.
Ulrich was from Azle, Texas, northwest of Fort Worth. Southern Nazarene’s 2026 roster lists him at 5 feet 10 inches and 200 pounds. He attended Azle High School, where the university said he played varsity football, earned second-team all-district recognition and received second-team Academic All-State honors. He also competed in powerlifting.
At Southern Nazarene, Ulrich majored in finance and wore No. 30. He was in his third season with the Crimson Storm program after joining the team in 2024. School records list him as a sophomore in 2026. Published reports said he had appeared in 20 games for Southern Nazarene and started 16, including six starts this season.
Ulrich had become an important part of Southern Nazarene’s defense. He entered the Ouachita Baptist game among the team’s leading tacklers and had produced a 20-tackle performance earlier in the season against Southern Arkansas. His final appearance came as Southern Nazarene fell to 1-5 with the loss at Ouachita Baptist.
The university’s decision to cancel Saturday’s game against Southwestern Oklahoma State left Southern Nazarene without a contest during what otherwise would have been the team’s next scheduled week of competition. The school did not announce additional details about Ulrich’s injury or any further changes to the football schedule in the statements reviewed.
As of Oct. 17, Southern Nazarene continued to mourn Ulrich while offering support to students and members of the football program. No additional medical findings or official cause of death had been publicly released by the university.
