In a heartbreaking event, a seven-year-old boy died after his head was caught in a car window. The boy’s mother, who was allegedly under the influence of drugs, was discovered unconscious in the front seat of the vehicle. The incident took place in Atlanta in April, and the mother is now facing murder charges.
The young boy, Mazi Simmons, was found lifeless and not breathing, his head sticking out from the rear window of a parked car. His mother, Kandice Grace, 32, was discovered unconscious in the driver’s seat. Two other children were also in the car when the incident occurred.
Grace was taken into custody on Monday and is now facing charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. According to a warrant obtained by People magazine, a blood and urine test performed on Grace tested positive for opioids and THC.
The warrant also revealed that a witness informed the police that Grace had visited his home around 10 p.m. the previous night. She decided to leave her children in the car, not wanting them to enter the house. She left shortly after her visit.
The next morning, the witness noticed Grace’s car in the parking lot, with the young boy’s head hanging out of the window. The witness tried to wake Grace by banging on the car. The unconscious boy was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police later found Grace at a neighbor’s house with her youngest child. The warrant alleges that Grace kept losing consciousness while sitting up and holding her child when investigators attempted to speak with her. Grace is currently being held at the Fulton County jail.
