Two Euclid residents face charges after the Father’s Day crash in Beachwood, Ohio.
BEACHWOOD, Ohio — A 3-year-old girl died after a car left a shopping center parking lot and struck her while she was eating with family outside a City Barbeque restaurant on Father’s Day, police said.
Beachwood police said the crash happened about 1:30 p.m. June 21 at the Pavilion Shopping Center. Investigators said 18-year-old Jasmine McFadden, of Euclid, was driving through the lot when the car crossed a curb and entered the outdoor dining area. The child was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, where she died.
Police charged Jasmine McFadden with aggravated vehicular homicide. Court records say she was driving without a license. Investigators also charged Kenneth McFadden, 61, of Euclid, who police said was in the front passenger seat and first told officers he was driving. He faces charges of obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment.
Authorities have not released the child’s name. Police said the speed of the vehicle remains unclear. In 911 calls, one caller said the car was in reverse at the time. Another caller described the child as badly injured before she was rushed inside and then taken for medical care.
Jasmine McFadden appeared Monday in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, where bond was set at $100,000. Her case was bound over to Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. Kenneth McFadden is scheduled for arraignment July 13 in Shaker Heights Municipal Court.
City Barbeque said its Beachwood restaurant is closed after the crash and has no reopening date. The company said it was “heartbroken” and was cooperating with local authorities. Beachwood police said the investigation remains open as officers review what led to the crash.
Kenneth McFadden is known in northeast Ohio as a former Cleveland State basketball standout who helped lead the Vikings to the Sweet 16 in 1986. Police did not say whether his relationship to Jasmine McFadden was part of the investigation.
The Beachwood Police Department said it extends condolences to the child’s family and recognizes the effect on relatives, witnesses, first responders and restaurant workers. The next court date listed in the case is Kenneth McFadden’s July 13 arraignment.
