Father Shoots Daughter Dead During Father’s Day Family Fight

Deputies said the shooting happened during a fight between the woman and her mother.

AZLE, Texas — A 61-year-old Parker County man was jailed on a murder charge after deputies said he fatally shot his adult daughter during a Father’s Day fight inside the family’s Azle-area home.

Charles Tod Brooks is accused in the death of 25-year-old Rebekah Bailey Brooks, who was shot in the chest June 21. The Parker County Sheriff’s Office said Brooks told investigators he had retrieved, loaded and chambered a handgun before trying to separate his daughter and her mother during a physical fight.

Deputies were called to the home after a 911 report of a gunshot victim. They found Rebekah Brooks wounded and began first aid before fire and medical crews arrived. Authorities said CPR and other lifesaving efforts continued at the scene, but she died there. Sgt. Shane Cartwright, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said investigators learned early that Charles Brooks was responsible for the fatal shot.

Investigators said statements from people involved showed the fight began between Rebekah Brooks and her mother inside the residence. Brooks told deputies he got a handgun, loaded it and chambered a round before stepping in. According to his account to law enforcement, the gun fired as he tried to separate the women, striking his daughter in the chest. Officials have not said what started the fight or released detailed forensic findings.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Rebekah Bailey Brooks. Friends described her as warm and welcoming. Brianna Tucker, a friend, told a local television station that Brooks was “such a happy person” and said she was sickened after learning how the shooting happened. Tucker said Brooks also left behind a young son.

Brooks was booked into the Parker County Jail on a first-degree felony murder charge. His bond was set at $2 million by Parker County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Kelvin Miles. Sheriff Russ Authier said the sheriff’s office’s thoughts and prayers were with the victim’s family and loved ones.

The case remains under investigation by the Parker County Sheriff’s Office, with help from the Texas Rangers. Prosecutors had not publicly announced the next court date as of June 24.
