10-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Murder of Former Louisiana Mayor and Daughter

A 10-year-old boy in Louisiana has been arrested on two counts of first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a former mayor and his adult daughter. The victims, identified as ex-Minden Mayor Joe Cornelius Sr., 82, and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in Cornelius’ residence early Sunday, according to Police Chief Jared McIver.

The boy, who is related to the victims, was taken into custody after the incident. However, the nature of the relationship has not been disclosed by the authorities. The child reportedly admitted to the crime, showing no signs of remorse, as per local media reports.

The incident reportedly followed a heated argument between the boy and Cornelius over credit card charges related to video games. A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told local media that he heard eight gunshots around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, following a loud argument between the boy and Cornelius. The neighbor also suggested that the boy might have autism, but this has not been confirmed by the police.

Cornelius, a respected figure in the community, had a long history of public service. He served on the Minden city council for many years and was appointed mayor in 2013 following the death of his predecessor. He was also known for his work at a local funeral home, his involvement in youth programs, and his efforts to promote local black history.

Miles, a mother of three, is mourned by her children. Her eldest son, 17, has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her funeral expenses. The current Mayor of Minden, Nick Cox, expressed his gratitude for Cornelius’ service and friendship in a public statement.

The police have not released further details about the nature of the argument that led to the shooting or confirmed whether the boy has autism. The 10-year-old is currently being held on two counts of first-degree murder.
