Woman Found Dead Inside Luxury Hotel Room

Melissa Tibbetts, 45, was found dead at the Loews Atlanta Hotel in October, and a suspect was arrested weeks later.

ATLANTA — A man has been arrested on murder and aggravated battery charges after a 45-year-old woman was found dead last month inside a room at the Loews Atlanta Hotel in Midtown Atlanta, authorities said.

Melissa Tibbetts was found dead Oct. 14 after Atlanta police officers responded to the hotel at 1065 Peachtree St. NE. Hotel staff directed officers to a room, where they found the woman unresponsive. The Fulton County Medical Examiner determined the death was a homicide the following day, and Atlanta homicide detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Investigators identified Emanuel Poindexter as a suspect on Oct. 22 and obtained warrants for his arrest, Atlanta police said. Poindexter was in Gwinnett County at the time and was receiving medical treatment for what police described as a self-inflicted knife wound. Authorities said he was taken into custody after doctors medically cleared him and was then booked into the Fulton County Jail.

Poindexter faces charges of murder and aggravated battery. An arrest warrant obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution alleges that Tibbetts suffered a broken hyoid bone in her neck and was struck several times, causing fatal injuries. The allegations in the warrant have not been proven in court, and the criminal charges do not establish guilt.

Police have not publicly explained what evidence led detectives to identify Poindexter as the person allegedly involved in Tibbetts’ death. Authorities also have not announced a suspected motive or publicly described what relationship, if any, existed between Tibbetts and Poindexter. News reports have provided conflicting ages for Poindexter, so his age could not be reliably confirmed from the available information.

The investigation began when officers were called to the Loews Atlanta Hotel on Peachtree Street in Midtown on Oct. 14. One police account said hotel employees directed responding officers to room 2519. The woman was already dead when officers entered the room, and homicide investigators took control of the scene. The Fulton County Medical Examiner removed the body and later classified the manner of death as homicide.

Tibbetts’ family identified her publicly after her death. An obituary said she lived in Lawrenceville and worked as an executive assistant. The obituary described her as a mother who enjoyed traveling, collecting elephant-themed items and spending time near the ocean. Those personal details emerged as police continued working to identify and locate the person they believed was responsible for her death.

By Oct. 22, detectives said they had developed enough information to identify Poindexter as a suspect and secure arrest warrants. Atlanta police later learned that he was receiving treatment in Gwinnett County. After he was medically cleared, the department’s Fugitive Unit took him into custody and transported him to the Fulton County Jail. Police announced the arrest Nov. 3, nearly three weeks after Tibbetts was found dead.

Local reports initially differed on some details of the case, including Poindexter’s age and whether authorities had publicly identified Tibbetts. Her family later identified her, while an arrest warrant provided additional information about the injuries prosecutors allege caused her death. Authorities have not released a broader account of what they believe happened before Tibbetts was found or explained whether investigators believe anyone else was present.

The case now moves into the Fulton County court system. Police said Poindexter’s arrest allowed them to close the active homicide investigation, but the criminal prosecution remains pending. No reliable information available Wednesday confirmed a plea, trial date or final resolution of the charges, and authorities had not publicly announced a motive.
