A driver later returned to the Bissonnet Street scene and told investigators she might have struck a pedestrian.
HOUSTON — Houston police are investigating the death of a woman found in the roadway on Bissonnet Street early Sunday after a Houston Fire Department ambulance crew spotted her while traveling through southwest Houston.
The woman was found in the 11400 block of Bissonnet at about 1:45 a.m. Sept. 27, according to the Houston Police Department. Police said she had head injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The ambulance crew stopped after seeing her in the roadway, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity was pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences when police released an update Monday.
Investigators with the Houston Police Department’s Vehicular Crimes Division responded to determine what happened. While officers were working at the scene, the driver of a black Chevrolet Suburban arrived and told investigators she believed she might have hit a pedestrian, police said.
According to police, the driver said she initially knew only that her vehicle had struck something in the roadway. Authorities did not say she had knowingly left the scene after striking a person. Police also did not immediately establish that the Suburban was the vehicle responsible for the woman’s fatal injuries.
Police said the driver showed no signs of intoxication. Investigators questioned her and released her as the inquiry continued. Authorities did not announce an arrest or charge in the case in their latest public update.
The circumstances before the woman was found remain unclear. Police have not publicly explained why she was in the roadway, how long she had been there or whether investigators believe another vehicle may have been involved. Those details remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Initial reporting Sunday described the incident as a possible hit-and-run because the woman was found with injuries that appeared consistent with being struck by a vehicle and no confirmed driver had been identified. The later police update provided additional information about the Suburban driver returning to the scene but stopped short of establishing that her vehicle caused the fatal injuries.
The Houston Police Department identified the case as a fatal crash investigation being handled by its Vehicular Crimes Division. Police said the woman’s identity remained pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, and no name was included in the department’s Monday announcement.
Investigators had not publicly announced a final determination about the vehicle involved or the precise sequence of events leading to the woman’s death. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
