Woman Fatally Shot in Hospital While Visiting Boyfriend

Jessica Cyrus was visiting James F. Lawson at an Independence hospital when authorities say she suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged with second-degree murder and two firearm-related felonies after a woman visiting him at an Independence hospital was fatally shot inside his patient room, authorities said.

James F. Lawson, 39, faces charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in the death of Jessica Cyrus, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. Independence police said the incident occurred at about 1:37 a.m. Oct. 22 at a hospital in the 19600 block of East 39th Street. Local news organizations identified the facility as Centerpoint Medical Center. A judge set Lawson’s bond at $250,000 cash only.

Police said Cyrus was visiting Lawson, who had been admitted to the hospital as a patient, when she suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Officers were called to the hospital later that morning after Cyrus was found dead. Lawson had left the hospital before police arrived but was later located and taken into custody, according to the Independence Police Department.

Investigators reviewed hospital surveillance footage as part of the case. According to the prosecutor’s office, the video showed Lawson seated in a wheelchair facing Cyrus as she appeared to struggle to breathe and began bending forward. Authorities said Lawson was then seen handling the area around his pants and hip while a dark object was visible in his right hand. Prosecutors have not said that the footage captured the actual shooting.

When officers located Lawson, authorities said he had a holster on his hip and ammunition in his wheelchair. The prosecutor’s office cited those findings in announcing the charges. Local reports citing court records said no firearm was found in the hospital room. Authorities have not publicly identified the weapon believed to have been used or explained what happened to it.

Lawson told investigators that his memory of the night was unclear, according to court records described by local news organizations. He attributed his confusion to medication and illness while he was hospitalized. Those statements are part of the allegations in the criminal case and have not been tested in court. Authorities have not announced a motive or described a confirmed argument or confrontation before Cyrus was shot.

Police said everyone believed to have been involved in the incident has been accounted for and there are no outstanding suspects. The department’s Criminal Investigations Unit continues to examine the circumstances surrounding Cyrus’ death.

The hospital said in a statement reported by local media that it was cooperating with law enforcement and that the safety and privacy of patients, visitors and employees remained a priority. Authorities have not publicly detailed the hospital’s security procedures at the time of the shooting or explained how a firearm allegedly entered the facility.

Lawson remains accused of the three felony charges as the case moves through Jackson County court. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless he pleads guilty or is found guilty. Police have said the homicide investigation remains active.
