Lauren Winans, 31, faces felony charges involving a child younger than 12 after a Nelson County grand jury indictment.
BARDSTOWN, Ky. — A 31-year-old Kentucky woman has been indicted on felony charges accusing her of sexually abusing a child younger than 12, with allegations including first-degree sodomy, incest and sexual abuse, according to court information and published reports.
Lauren Winans of Bardstown was arrested Oct. 22 after a Nelson County grand jury returned an indictment in the case. Reports citing the indictment say the alleged offenses occurred in Nelson County between Jan. 1 and Nov. 20, 2022. Winans has not been convicted, and the indictment represents accusations that prosecutors would have to prove in court.
Published accounts describe four felony counts, although reports differ on the precise breakdown of those charges. Local television station WLKY reported that Winans faces several charges, including sexual abuse and sodomy involving a victim younger than 12. Other reporting citing the indictment also lists an incest charge. Because available reports conflict over how the four counts are divided, the exact count-by-count breakdown could not be independently confirmed from a complete copy of the indictment.
The indictment alleges that at least some of the conduct involved a child who was related to Winans. Public reports have differed over whether every charge involves the same child, and authorities have not publicly clarified the exact family relationship. The child is not being identified because the case involves allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. Publicly available reporting also has not disclosed the evidence presented to the grand jury or explained when authorities first became aware of the allegations.
Kentucky State Police are the primary investigating agency, according to reporting about a statement from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said it was not involved in the investigation and directed questions about the criminal allegations to state police. The office also addressed public attention surrounding Winans because her husband previously worked for the sheriff’s department and later joined the Bardstown Police Department. The reviewed reports do not accuse him of involvement in the alleged offenses.
Winans was booked following her arrest and was reported by WLKY to be held at the LaRue County Detention Center. Other published reports said her bond was set at $250,000. Reports released afterward were not consistent about whether she remained in custody, and an updated official detention record confirming her current status was not available in the material reviewed for this report.
Kentucky law classifies first-degree sodomy involving a victim younger than 12 as a Class A felony. State sentencing law generally provides a prison term of 20 to 50 years or life imprisonment for a Class A felony. First-degree sexual abuse involving a victim younger than 12 is classified as a Class C felony. Those statutory ranges describe possible penalties and do not represent a sentence against Winans. Any punishment would depend on the charges ultimately proved or resolved in court.
Kentucky’s incest law covers specified family relationships and provides enhanced felony classifications when the alleged victim is younger than 12. The precise application of that statute in Winans’ case will depend on the charge alleged in the indictment and the facts established through the court process. Authorities have not publicly released enough verified information to establish the specific family relationship alleged in the case.
Winans is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 5 in Nelson Circuit Court, according to WLKY and other reports. An arraignment is an early court proceeding at which criminal charges are formally addressed; it is not a determination of guilt. No plea had been publicly reported in the sources reviewed, and it was not clear whether an attorney had entered an appearance for Winans.
The prosecution remains pending. Additional details about the allegations, the exact four-count breakdown and Winans’ current custody status may become clearer through court records or her scheduled arraignment. She is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
