Amanda Howery, a resident of Missouri, has initiated legal proceedings against her landlord, alleging that she was assaulted by raccoons that descended through a damaged ceiling while she was sleeping. The lawsuit was lodged against SCI REI LLC and Sage Door Property Management LLC in the Jackson County Circuit Court on August 16, as per court documents. Both entities were formally served with a summons on August 19.
Howery is demanding a minimum of $25,000 in compensation for the incident, which she attributes to the rental companies’ negligence. The event took place in February 2023 at her rented residence in Kansas City. Howery contends that the property was in a state of disrepair, with a gaping hole in the roof and a compromised ceiling.
The plaintiff maintains that she was oblivious to the poor state of the property before the raccoon incident. She argues that no reasonable tenant would have foreseen the ceiling damage. The lawsuit includes two counts of negligence, alleging that the rental companies either were aware or should have been aware of the hazardous conditions of the property.
The reported raccoon attack has allegedly resulted in medical costs, disfigurement, and lost income for Howery. She also alleges to have experienced mental distress and a decrease in life enjoyment, both in the past and in the future.
The legal counsel for SCI and Sage Door have not yet responded to requests for comment on the case. Court documents reveal that the next hearing in the case is slated for December.
