A horrific incident unfolded in a Michigan Walmart on Saturday evening, as a man armed with a folding knife attacked shoppers, leaving 11 people injured. The assailant, a 42-year-old male, began his violent spree around 5 p.m., targeting individuals at random throughout the store located in Traverse City, approximately 255 miles northwest of Detroit, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea.
The victims of this shocking incident were not specifically targeted, Sheriff Shea confirmed in a press conference held later that evening. He emphasized that such violent incidents are highly unusual for Traverse City. The suspect was apprehended following the attack, with six of the victims in critical condition and the remaining five in serious condition.
The terrifying episode began near the store’s checkout counter, causing panic among shoppers and employees. Tasha Nash, an employee at the store, recounted the chaos, stating that the entire store erupted in screams and people began to run. She witnessed the assailant stab six people, including one individual in the eye.
The assailant was eventually subdued by two courageous shoppers, one of whom was armed, before law enforcement arrived on the scene and took him into custody. Video footage from the scene showed the unidentified suspect surrounded by shouting bystanders, including the armed civilian who helped detain him.
A shopper who arrived at the store shortly after the violent incident expressed shock at the number of first responders present. The witness, who was preparing to enter the store as the incident unfolded, described a scene filled with police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, rescue vehicles, and crime scene units. The store was subsequently evacuated, with employees sent home and customers asked to leave.
The injured individuals were transported to Munson Medical Center, the largest hospital in northern Michigan, for treatment. Munson Healthcare acknowledged the incident on Facebook, expressing their thoughts for those affected and gratitude towards the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action.
The identity of the assailant and his motive for the attack have not been released by the police. However, it has been confirmed that the suspect is a resident of Michigan. A spokesperson for Walmart expressed their condolences for the victims and gratitude for the quick response of the first responders.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also expressed her thoughts for the victims and the community, praising the swift response of the first responders. The FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated that the federal agency is providing support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their ongoing investigation.
