Tia Chandler said she was waiting after an asthma treatment when she realized the Keene clinic had closed with her still inside.
KEENE, N.H. — A New Hampshire woman seeking treatment for an asthma attack was accidentally left alone inside an urgent care clinic after employees closed the facility for the night, forcing her to call 911 after realizing no staff members remained.
Tia Chandler, 46, said she went to the ConvenientMD urgent care clinic in Keene on Sept. 24 and received a steroid injection at about 7:45 p.m. A staff member told her someone would return, according to her account to local news organizations. Chandler continued waiting in an exam room, but eventually noticed how quiet the building had become and began looking for an employee.
Chandler said she initially assumed a small group of workers might still be cleaning or finishing work elsewhere in the clinic. She called out and went toward the front of the facility but found no one. By then, the clinic had closed for the night and the staff had left with Chandler still inside.
Chandler said she texted her husband after realizing she had been left behind and asked him to call 911. She also tried to leave the building and triggered an alarm. Keene police confirmed to WMUR that officers responded to the incident. No injuries resulting from Chandler being left inside were reported.
The experience came after Chandler had sought care for an asthma attack. She told WMUR that the situation became alarming once she realized she was alone and unable to find anyone who worked at the facility. She said she had previously used the clinic on multiple occasions but would probably not return after what happened.
ConvenientMD acknowledged the incident and apologized. In a statement provided to WMUR, the company said what happened should not have occurred and did not reflect the level of care it seeks to provide patients in the Keene area. The company said the practice manager apologized directly to Chandler.
The urgent care provider also said it had taken steps intended to prevent another patient from being left inside after closing. ConvenientMD did not publicly detail all of the measures it implemented or identify individual employees involved in closing the clinic that night.
The Keene location lists regular daily operating hours ending at 8 p.m. Chandler said she was treated shortly before closing and remained in the exam room while waiting for staff to return. She later told reporters that she had tried to be patient because the clinic appeared busy near the end of the day.
Chandler has since spoken publicly about the incident, saying she wanted to draw attention to what occurred so another patient would not have the same experience. ConvenientMD said it remains committed to providing care in the Keene community and has taken action following the incident.
No criminal charges or formal enforcement action related to the incident had been publicly announced as of Thursday. Keene police confirmed their response, while ConvenientMD continued to characterize the episode as an unacceptable mistake for which it had apologized.
