McGrain, a pre-med student at the University of Kansas, originally hailed from Omaha, Nebraska. She was out for her routine jog around 6 p.m. on a Thursday when she was struck by a vehicle. Her body was discovered at 3:35 a.m. the following Friday by a passerby who immediately alerted the police.
Upon investigating the scene, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that McGrain had been fatally hit while jogging. The vehicle involved in the incident is suspected to be an all-white pickup truck, a conclusion drawn from images released by the department.
McGrain was a beloved figure in her community, both in her hometown and at the University of Kansas. She was on track to graduate in 2026 and was an active member of the Chi Omega sorority, where she served on the executive board as house manager.
