An Uber Eats delivery driver in Sydney, Australia, has been dismissed from his job after being caught on surveillance footage allegedly urinating in an apartment building elevator. The incident occurred on March 10 in Artarmon, a suburb on Sydney’s North Shore. The driver was seen entering the elevator with a takeout bag from Betty’s Burgers.
The CCTV footage reportedly shows the man, with his back to the camera, adjusting his pants and moving to the front corner of the elevator. After the driver exits, a wet patch is visible on the elevator carpet. The driver’s account has since been deactivated by Uber Eats, effectively ending his employment with the company.
Uber Eats confirmed the incident and stated that they were investigating the matter. A spokesperson for the company condemned the driver’s behavior, stating it was unacceptable and violated the company’s community guidelines. The guidelines, which apply to all users including delivery personnel, stipulate that any breach can result in loss of access to the Uber app.
The New South Wales Police have also launched an investigation into the incident. They are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The incident was described in detail by 2GB host Ben Fordham, who stated there was no doubt about what the driver had done.
Geoffrey Grasso, a resident and secretary of the apartment building, expressed his disgust at the incident. He believes the driver switched hands as he exited the elevator, implying that he may have handled the food after urinating. Grasso stated that the incident raised questions about Uber Eats’ food handling training for their drivers.
Grasso also revealed that the elevator still smelled after being cleaned and might require extensive repairs costing thousands of dollars. He condemned the driver’s actions as a breach of normal etiquette and health standards.
