A third person suffered a graze wound and was released as police investigated what led to the gunfire.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Two people were killed and a third was injured in a shooting early Sunday at Hidden Gem Restaurant in Southfield, police said, as investigators worked to determine what led to the gunfire.
Southfield police responded at about 3:33 a.m. Aug. 9 to a report of shots fired at the restaurant at 16000 W. Nine Mile Road. Officers found an adult man with apparent gunshot wounds when they arrived. He died at the scene, according to police. Two other people involved in the shooting made their own way to a hospital.
One of those two victims had been shot multiple times and later died at the hospital, police said. The third person suffered a graze wound, received treatment and was released. Authorities had not publicly released the identities or ages of the two people who died in the latest reports available Sunday.
Police said there appeared to be no additional threat to the public as the investigation continued. Authorities had not announced what caused the shooting or publicly identified a suspect. No arrest had been reported, and police had not released information about whether a firearm was recovered.
Details about what happened immediately before the shooting also remained limited. A Hidden Gem staff member told WDIV that two men who knew each other encountered one another and began arguing before gunfire followed. Police had not publicly confirmed that account or identified an argument as the motive for the shooting.
The restaurant is on West Nine Mile Road near Ascension Providence Hospital. Local television footage showed police activity and crime scene tape around the property Sunday as investigators worked at the scene. The building, which contains several businesses, was closed while the investigation was underway.
Authorities had not publicly clarified whether the gunfire occurred inside the restaurant, immediately outside it or elsewhere on the property. Police also had not said how many people were present when the shooting began or provided a detailed sequence of events leading to the deaths.
FOX 2 Detroit and CBS News Detroit, citing Southfield police, also reported that one victim died at the scene and another died after reaching a hospital. Both outlets reported that the third victim’s wound was not fatal and that police did not believe there was an ongoing danger to the public.
The deaths remained under active investigation late Sunday. Police had not announced criminal charges, identified a suspect or released a confirmed motive. Investigators continued gathering information about the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the three victims.
