Three Dead, One Hospitalized After Family Shooting

The suspected shooter was among those killed at a rural Caswell County home, authorities said.

PROSPECT HILL, N.C. — Three relatives were killed and a fourth was hospitalized after a shooting Wednesday morning at a rural Caswell County home, authorities said. The suspected shooter was among those who died.

Caswell County deputies responded shortly before 8 a.m. Aug. 5 to a call for service at a home on Brooks Road in the Prospect Hill community. Officers found four adults with gunshot wounds, according to information released by the Sheriff’s Office and local news reports. Three were pronounced dead, while the surviving person was taken to Duke University Hospital.

Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said all four people were members of the same family and were older than 17. Authorities had not released their names, exact ages or relationships as of early Thursday. The condition of the hospitalized relative also remained unknown.

Durden said the person investigators believed was responsible for the shooting was among the dead. Officials have not explained what led to the gunfire, identified a motive or released a detailed sequence of events. They also have not said who made the initial call to authorities.

Investigators described the shooting as an isolated incident contained to the property. The Sheriff’s Office said there was no continuing danger to the surrounding community. No other suspect was being sought based on the information authorities had released.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation joined the inquiry at Durden’s request. State investigators were collecting evidence and interviewing people connected to the case. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol and several local emergency agencies also assisted at the scene.

Durden said investigators had not found evidence that members of the household previously contacted the Sheriff’s Office about domestic problems. That statement did not rule out possible contact with other agencies, and officials had not released a broader history involving the family or property.

Authorities released different preliminary times for the response. Some reports placed the call shortly before 8 a.m., while a State Bureau of Investigation statement said the shooting occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Both accounts placed the incident Wednesday morning at the Brooks Road residence.

The property is in a wooded, lightly populated section of Caswell County near the Virginia state line. Law enforcement vehicles remained gathered around the home for hours as investigators secured the area and examined the scene.

Officials have not disclosed what type of firearm was recovered, whether the wounded relative had spoken with investigators or whether anyone else was inside the home when deputies arrived. Those questions remained part of the active investigation.

The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said more information would be released when the investigation and notifications to relatives allowed. The identities of the dead and the hospitalized person had not been made public as of Thursday morning.
