An 18-year-old Italian girl, Elena, recently passed away due to a rare genetic disorder known as mitochondrial disease. Elena was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease in 2016, making her the only known case in Italy. This genetic disorder often results in seizures, intellectual disability, and ataxia, a neurological condition that causes a lack of muscle coordination.
