Teen “Stuck in Child’s Body” Passes Away

An 18-year-old Italian girl, Elena, recently passed away due to a rare genetic disorder known as mitochondrial disease. This condition, which left her physically resembling a child, was chronicled by her mother, Andreea, on social media. The news of Elena’s passing deeply saddened her mother’s substantial online following.

Elena was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease in 2016, making her the only known case in Italy. This genetic disorder often results in seizures, intellectual disability, and ataxia, a neurological condition that causes a lack of muscle coordination. Elena’s condition was severe, affecting her growth and the functionality of many of her organs.

Despite her physical limitations, Elena was known for her vibrant spirit and her passion for life, music, and creativity. Her resilience and zest for life were an inspiration to many, both within and beyond her online community.

Mitochondrial disease is extremely rare, with only 18 known cases worldwide as of 2020, according to the Journal of Medical Genetics. Andreea regularly updated her 220,000 Instagram followers on Elena’s condition, especially during her hospital stays.

Although there is no known cure for mitochondrial disease, Elena’s family remained hopeful and committed to ensuring she lived a joyful life. Prior to Elena’s passing, Andreea expressed her unwavering support and love for her daughter, encouraging her to keep fighting.

Following Elena’s death, Andreea shared a heartfelt tribute to her daughter on social media, expressing her desire to remember Elena’s radiant smile. She also expressed her belief that Elena was now singing with angels and assured her that the family’s love for her was eternal.

Elena’s story touched many lives around the world, as evidenced by the outpouring of love and support in the comments on Andreea’s posts. Elena passed away in a hospital in Genoa, where she lived with her mother, father Paolo Delle Piane, brothers Daniele and Luca, and youngest sibling Vittoria.
