Teen Stabs Buddy, Dismembers Body and Dumps Remains

A 21-year-old Utah man, Rowdy Lee Aguilar, is facing a prison sentence of 25 years to life after admitting to the brutal murder of his 15-year-old friend, Ivan Vetecnik. Aguilar, who was 17 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder with a mental health condition, according to the Salt Lake County District Attorney.

The chilling crime took place on May 26, 2021, when surveillance footage captured Aguilar and Vetecnik entering Aguilar’s residence around 10 a.m. Three hours later, Aguilar was seen leaving the house alone, his shirt soaked in blood. He was later spotted at a nearby business, carrying garbage bags.

The gruesome discovery of Vetecnik’s body was made later that day by Aguilar’s father, who alerted the police after finding the remains in a cargo trailer that reeked of cleaning agents. A subsequent police investigation led to the recovery of a bloody leather glove, a knife, and additional body parts from behind Aguilar’s home.

Initially, Aguilar denied any knowledge of Vetecnik’s whereabouts, claiming he had spent the entire day at his girlfriend’s house. He also explained the cuts on his hands as injuries from preparing ribs for a barbecue. However, he later confessed to the murder, simply stating, “I did it.” The investigators have not disclosed any potential motive behind the brutal attack.

Aguilar will be held at a youth facility until he turns 25, after which he will be transferred to an adult prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. His sentencing is scheduled for December 5.

The guilty plea has brought some relief to Vetecnik’s family, with his sister, Samantha VanTreese, expressing her feelings on social media. She acknowledged that the guilty plea felt like a victory, but added that no prison sentence could ever compensate for the loss of her younger brother.
