Authorities said 17-year-old Reginald Harrell died after an altercation with a 16-year-old coworker at a northwest Harris County restaurant.
CYPRESS, Texas — A 17-year-old McDonald’s employee was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a 16-year-old coworker at a northwest Harris County restaurant, and the younger teen has been charged with murder, authorities said.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the victim as Reginald Harrell. Authorities said Harrell and the 16-year-old suspect both worked at the McDonald’s in the 13300 block of Louetta Road in Cypress. The younger employee remained at the scene and was detained by deputies before authorities later announced a murder charge. His identity has not been released because he is a juvenile. Investigators had not publicly identified a motive as of Thursday.
Deputies with Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman’s office responded after a manager reported a stabbing at the restaurant late Wednesday night into early Thursday. Authorities said deputies found Harrell inside a restroom suffering from multiple stab wounds. Employees attempted to provide medical assistance before emergency responders arrived, and paramedics continued lifesaving efforts, but Harrell was pronounced dead at the restaurant.
Investigators said Harrell and the younger employee had been involved in an altercation before the stabbing. Authorities have released few details about how the dispute began or why it escalated. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the teenagers knew each other through their work at the restaurant. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The case developed throughout Thursday as investigators released additional information. Early reports identified those involved only as two juvenile employees and said one had been detained. Officials later identified Harrell, confirmed that he was 17 and announced that the 16-year-old suspect had been charged with murder and booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center. The charge is an allegation, and the teenager has not been found guilty.
Harrell’s family told ABC13 that he was a high school senior who had started working at the McDonald’s earlier this year. Relatives described him as loving, fun and frequently smiling. His family said they did not know what could have led to the confrontation, while investigators likewise said a motive had not been established publicly.
Workers and customers in the surrounding shopping center expressed shock after learning about the killing. Several people who spoke with local media said they had considered the area safe and had positive experiences with employees at the restaurant. The McDonald’s location remained closed Thursday while the investigation continued.
Restaurant owner Michael Gutierrez said in a statement that the business was saddened by Harrell’s death and was supporting employees affected by the incident. He expressed sympathy for Harrell’s family and others impacted by the killing. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about what happened immediately before the confrontation.
Because the accused employee is 16, the case is being handled through the juvenile justice system. Authorities have not released his name, and no announcement had been made Thursday about any effort to transfer the case to adult court. Homicide detectives continued investigating the stabbing and had not announced a motive.
