Teen Girl Shot Outside McDonald’s

A 19-year-old man was also shot as police searched for a gunman and examined a vehicle near the restaurant’s drive-thru.

NEW YORK — A 17-year-old girl was shot at least five times and a 19-year-old man was wounded in the face during gunfire outside a McDonald’s in Brooklyn, police said. Both victims were expected to survive.

The shooting happened shortly before midnight Monday in the restaurant’s parking lot on Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York. Police said bullets were directed toward three teenagers who were standing near a white Honda Pilot close to the drive-thru. Investigators had not identified a suspect or disclosed what may have led to the attack.

The girl suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her body, while the 19-year-old man was struck in the face, according to police. An 18-year-old man who was with them ran from the gunfire, fell and suffered a minor cut to his face. Emergency medical workers took all three to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.

Police said the girl was in stable condition and that the two people struck by gunfire were expected to recover. Authorities did not release the victims’ names. The girl’s identity was withheld because she is a minor.

Detectives focused part of their investigation on the white Honda Pilot found near the drive-thru. Video from the scene showed what appeared to be blood above the rear bumper and damage resembling a bullet hole in the passenger-side windshield. Police had not said who owned the vehicle or whether any of the teenagers had been inside it.

Investigators marked possible evidence in the parking lot while officers remained outside the restaurant overnight. Police were also canvassing nearby businesses for surveillance recordings that could show the shooting, the person responsible or the direction in which the gunman fled.

Authorities had not disclosed how many shots were fired or whether a weapon was recovered. They also had not said whether the teenagers were deliberately targeted or were struck by gunfire intended for someone else.

Thomas Haynes, a community anti-violence activist, told WABC that shootings near neighborhood businesses have left residents worried about their safety. He said the violence was especially troubling because it involved young people in a public place where families and other customers gather.

No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday, and police had not released a description of the shooter. The investigation remained active as detectives reviewed evidence and searched for witnesses.
