Teen Girl Dies While in Police Custody

An 18-year-old Bronx Community College student, Sonia Cheatham, tragically lost her life while in police custody, leaving her family in a state of shock and seeking answers. Sonia was discovered unresponsive in a cell at the NYPD’s 41st Precinct, following her arrest due to a disagreement with her girlfriend.

Sonia’s mother, Thomasina, vividly remembers her daughter’s vivacious spirit at a family gathering in Crotona Park just hours before the unfortunate incident. Thomasina, choked with emotion, recalls Sonia’s laughter and expressions of love during their last moments together.

According to the NYPD, officers found Sonia unconscious in the early hours of Saturday morning. Despite immediate calls for emergency medical services and officers performing CPR, Sonia was declared dead upon arrival at Lincoln Hospital.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Sonia’s death. However, Thomasina is left grappling with numerous unanswered questions, particularly regarding how her healthy daughter could have died in a precinct cell. She is desperate to understand the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death, questioning if her daughter was under proper surveillance.

Sonia, a young woman full of life and passion for music and dance, had a promising future ahead of her. Thomasina now pins her hopes on police surveillance footage and body camera recordings to provide some clarity on the events leading up to her daughter’s death. She firmly believes that the footage should reveal the truth, emphasizing the importance of transparency in this case.

The medical examiner’s report, which is still pending, is expected to shed further light on the cause of Sonia’s death. As Thomasina mourns the loss of her only daughter among her four sons, she seeks justice and clarity for her daughter’s untimely demise.
