Teacher Dies Two Years After Consuming Toxic Cocktail

A tragic incident unfolded in Oklahoma when a third-grade teacher and mother of three succumbed to complications two years after consuming a cocktail laced with industrial cleaner. Holly Hill, 30, experienced severe discomfort and began vomiting immediately after drinking a margarita at a local Mexican restaurant, Hacienda Las Margaritas Bar & Grill, on Valentine’s Day 2023. Her mother, Kelly Hunter, shared that Holly’s mouth felt like it was “on fire,” indicating that something was seriously wrong.

Holly’s immediate reaction was to rush to the restroom to rinse her mouth and vomit. The toxic cocktail had caused a hole in her esophagus, leading to a series of health complications. Despite her health struggles, Holly continued to teach and care for her family, demonstrating her resilience and dedication.

Holly’s family confirmed her passing on Thursday, attributing her death to the complications arising from the horrifying incident at the restaurant. Following the incident, Holly had sued the restaurant, resulting in a confidential settlement due to her ongoing health issues.

In the days leading up to her death, Holly underwent another medical procedure. Doctors discovered that the hole in her esophagus was not fully healed, but the inflammation had reduced. This allowed them to bring in a pulmonologist to assist in stitching it up. Holly’s mother shared on social media that her daughter would need to continue with tube feeds and return for a swallow study to monitor her progress.

The Elgin Police Department, in collaboration with the Comanche County District Attorney, has reached out to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation regarding the case. The Acting Police Chief, Ralph Parsons, announced on Monday that state investigators would initiate an inquiry into the matter, with the Elgin Police Department providing assistance.

The restaurant has not yet publicly commented on the ongoing investigation. However, they had previously issued a statement on social media in May 2023, expressing regret over the incident and acknowledging that such a situation should never have occurred.

Holly was a cherished member of the Elgin Public Schools, where she taught third grade. The school’s Superintendent, Nate Meraz, expressed his shock and grief over her unexpected passing, praising Holly as a dedicated teacher, Elgin Alumni, and a beloved mother and wife. A funeral service for Holly was held on Tuesday morning at the Elgin Schools Performing Arts Center.
