A 16-year-old student at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, was critically injured after being stabbed by a 15-year-old classmate, local authorities reported. The incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday during a fight involving three students.
The injured student was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. However, he is now in a stable condition and on the path to recovery, a development that Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis described as a relief for the entire community.
The 15-year-old perpetrator, whose identity has not been disclosed, was apprehended and charged with malicious wounding. A knife, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was found at the scene. Police have confirmed that there are no other suspects in what they have termed an “isolated” incident.
The third student involved in the altercation was questioned by the police, but Chief Davis does not expect him to face any charges.
Disturbing footage of the fight has been circulating among the student body, showing the students engaged in a violent brawl in the school’s hallway. Another image reportedly shows students and adults surrounding a teenager bleeding on the floor. According to the police, the attacker and the victim were acquainted with each other.
Chief Davis expressed sadness over the incident, particularly given the young age of the attacker. He stated that the police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of others.
Despite the violent incident, the school remained open and classes resumed. Michelle Reid, the superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, praised the staff’s response to the incident and thanked the first responders, who she said may have saved a life. Reid confirmed that there were no metal detectors in place at the school.
