Classes resumed Wednesday with crisis-response support as police continued investigating the student’s early-morning entry and death.
MARANA, Ariz. — Marana High School reopened Wednesday, one day after a student was found dead on campus before classes began, prompting administrators to cancel school while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the death.
Marana police responded to the high school at about 6:47 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, after staff members discovered the student. Police said preliminary information indicated the student had entered the campus without authorization at about 1:30 a.m. Two staff members later found the student dead. Authorities described the case as an isolated incident involving one person and said there was no continuing danger to students, employees or the surrounding community.
Police have not publicly identified the student or released the student’s age, cause of death or manner of death. Authorities said the student’s family had been notified. Investigators also have not publicly explained why the student entered the campus during the early-morning hours. The investigation remained open as of Friday.
The discovery led the Marana Unified School District to cancel classes Tuesday and close the campus while officers investigated. District officials said employees who had already arrived for work were safe and the school had been secured. Police remained at the campus as investigators worked through the morning and day.
In a message to families and employees, district officials said, “We are heartbroken, and we know this news has landed as a profound shock to our entire community.” Marana High administrators, members of the district’s crisis response team and Marana police later met with school staff before students returned.
The district said Marana High would reopen Wednesday on its normal schedule, with crisis-response personnel available to students and employees affected by the death. Classes and campus activities resumed as planned. Local reporting showed the school operating largely as usual Wednesday, although police vehicles remained visible near the campus.
Local television reporting said the student was found in the school library. Police initially described the location more generally as school grounds and did not publicly provide additional details about the scene in their early statement. Authorities have not announced evidence that another person was involved.
The district also began reviewing how the student entered the school. When asked whether a security alarm had been activated, district officials said the circumstances of the entry and the security system were being investigated. The district said it would continue working with law enforcement as that review proceeded.
Most sporting events and after-school activities scheduled for Tuesday were canceled because of the closure. A volleyball match was moved to Tucson High School, according to the district. Regular school operations resumed the following day.
As of Friday, police had not released further information about the student’s identity or the cause and manner of death. The investigation into both the death and the circumstances of the early-morning campus entry remained ongoing.
