Store Cashier Shot to Death by Angry Customer

The Milwaukee community is grappling with the loss of a beloved local figure, Jamil Owais, who was fatally shot in a dispute over pizza preparation at Action Food & Liquor, where he worked as a cashier. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on October 19, has left the community in shock and a family in mourning.

Charles Leggett, the alleged shooter, reportedly became irate over allegations that a cook had not worn gloves while preparing his pizza. The disagreement escalated into violence, with Leggett shooting Owais in the chest before fleeing the scene.

Owais, a prominent figure in his community, was known for his dedication to the family business and his warm, generous nature. He had immigrated to Milwaukee from the West Bank in 2013 and quickly became a cherished member of the community. On the day of the incident, Owais was filling in for his brother, highlighting the arbitrary nature of this tragic event.

Mohammad Owais, Jamil’s sister, expressed the deep grief felt by the family and the community. The family-owned store, a staple in the community, now carries the burden of this tragedy.

Customers of Action Food & Liquor have paid tribute to Owais, remembering his friendly demeanor and infectious laughter. His sudden absence has left a significant void in the community.

Legal authorities have charged Leggett, who was in illegal possession of the firearm due to previous convictions, with first-degree reckless homicide. He is currently awaiting trial with bail set at $200,000. If convicted, Leggett could face up to 75 years in prison.

In a bitter twist, it was confirmed after the incident that the cook had indeed been wearing gloves, casting a further pall over the senseless act of violence.
