Son Shot His Mother 11 Times in the Middle of the Night

A 20-year-old New Mexico resident, Kevin Marin, is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting his mother during a late-night argument. Marin is being charged with aggravated battery against a family member and attempted second-degree murder, as per court documents from Doña Ana County. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Monday at their home near Santa Teresa Elementary in Santa Teresa, a town located on the Texas border, northwest of El Paso and the U.S.-Mexico border.

The night of the incident, Marin’s brother, who was also in the house, reported hearing Marin arguing late into the night. He suggested Marin go to sleep, a sentiment echoed by their mother, who was worried about Marin’s erratic behavior, according to law enforcement reports. The mother then accompanied Marin to his room and stayed with him.

However, the peaceful domestic scene soon turned violent. Around 3 a.m., gunshots rang out in the house. Marin’s brother found their mother, who had been shot 11 times and was bleeding heavily, as stated in a court document.

The brother quickly transported his mother to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. Officers investigating the scene reportedly found multiple casings from a semi-automatic rifle/carbine. Another woman, who had been at the house during the shooting, returned after the victim was taken to the hospital. She found Marin sitting on the living room couch, as reported by a local NBC affiliate. Marin was arrested and charged later that day.

Court records from El Paso County, Texas, indicate that this is not Marin’s first run-in with the law. He was previously indicted in January 2024 on aggravated assault charges.
