Investigators believe the husband shot his wife before dying by suicide, though official autopsy findings remained pending.
CYPRESS, Texas — An adult son found his parents dead inside a bedroom at their Cypress-area home early Friday, leading Harris County investigators to open an apparent murder-suicide investigation.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the 13200 block of Campos Drive after the son contacted 911 at about 2:45 a.m. Deputies and emergency medical workers entered the home and confirmed that the married couple, both in their 70s, had died.
Investigators said evidence at the scene indicated that the husband shot his wife before dying by suicide. Authorities described that account as a preliminary finding while homicide detectives and crime scene investigators continued examining the Barwood neighborhood residence.
Sgt. Michael Ritchie of the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division said investigators were interviewing the couple’s sons and other relatives to determine what happened before the deaths. Two adult sons lived at the home with their parents, according to local reports citing investigators.
The sons told investigators that their parents sometimes argued but that they were not aware of any previous violence between them. Both sons were initially detained while detectives conducted interviews and were later released, according to the Houston Chronicle. Authorities did not identify either son as a suspect.
The couple had reportedly been married for more than 40 years. Officials had not announced a possible motive or said whether law enforcement had previously responded to the Campos Drive property.
Deputies remained outside the home during the morning as detectives processed the scene and spoke with relatives. Authorities said no information gathered during the initial investigation indicated that another person was being sought in connection with the deaths.
The identities of the husband and wife were not immediately released by the Sheriff’s Office. Reports differed on whether the husband had been privately identified, but authorities had not publicly released the couple’s full identities together as of Friday.
The couple’s bodies were taken to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences for examinations. Those examinations are expected to formally determine the cause and manner of each death. Investigators’ initial assessment does not replace the medical examiner’s final findings.
The investigation remained active Friday. The Sheriff’s Office had not released further details about the firearm, the timing of the shootings or any events that may have occurred before the son entered the bedroom.
