A man from Ocean City, aged 46, has been apprehended and accused of the savage killing of his 74-year-old mother. Jeffrey Surgent is alleged to have used a knife to end his mother, Alexandria’s life in their shared apartment.
Court records indicate that Surgent dialed 911, confessing to the operator that he had taken his mother’s life. During the call, he also mentioned his struggle with bipolar disorder, suggesting a potential motive for his actions.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene on Friday, they discovered Surgent unclothed and atop his mother’s lifeless, decapitated body. Throughout his interaction with the police, Surgent expressed regret for his horrific act.
Surgent is now facing charges of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is currently detained in Cape May County.
Family members of the victim informed the media that Alexandria had been visiting her son on the day of the incident. The apartment complex, situated on the 600 block of 6th Street, is associated with the Ocean City Housing Authority. As part of their investigation, authorities have examined surveillance footage from the building.
The investigation into this gruesome crime is a joint effort involving the Ocean City Police Department, the Major Crimes Unit of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and the New Jersey Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
