Softball Mom Tragically Killed During Game

A tragic incident unfolded at a Pennsylvania softball camp when a mother was fatally struck by falling tree branches while watching her daughter play. Gendie Miller, 49, and her husband, Bill, had sought shade under a large tree as they watched their 16-year-old daughter participate in a scrimmage at the Western PA College Showcase softball camp. The temperature that day had soared to 90 degrees.

The couple was enjoying the game when Bill heard a loud cracking sound. He quickly tried to move his wife away from the tree, but it was too late. A small branch grazed his leg as he jumped from his chair. When he turned back, he found his wife lying face down, pinned under a pile of large branches.

Gendie was struck on the head by one of the branches, causing her to lose consciousness. The softball coach, who later set up a GoFundMe page for the family, described the horrific scene. The branches that fell were substantial, with many measuring between 10 and 12 inches in thickness.

Bystanders rushed to help Gendie as emergency responders were called to the scene. She was loaded into an ambulance bound for Forbes Hospital. Medical personnel were assessing whether she could be airlifted to a more advanced trauma center when she stopped breathing. Gendie was later pronounced dead at Forbes Hospital.

Bill, who had been married to Gendie for 17 years, spoke of his wife’s devotion to their family. He said she was a dedicated mother who never missed any of her daughter’s practices or events, no matter the distance. He also spoke of her big heart, stating that it wasn’t her heart that failed her that tragic day.

The GoFundMe page set up for the family aims to alleviate the financial burden they now face due to this sudden and unexpected loss. All donations will go directly to the family to help them during this difficult time.
