School Counselor Charged After Alleged Campus Sex Acts

Police said detectives found evidence after receiving a report about conduct at Asheboro High School.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A former Asheboro High School counselor was arrested Friday after police said she had sexual activity with a juvenile student at the school, leading to two felony charges and her termination from the district.

Amber Elizabeth Walker, 39, was charged with two counts of sexual activity with a student after the Asheboro Police Department opened an investigation May 8. The case has drawn attention in Randolph County because Walker worked in a trusted school role and also was identified in public reports as a coach. Asheboro City Schools confirmed she is no longer employed by the district and said it is cooperating with law enforcement.

Police said officers received information at about 10:30 a.m. Friday that an Asheboro High School staff member had engaged in sexual activity with a juvenile student at the school on Wednesday, May 6. Detectives began investigating immediately and said they found evidence supporting the allegation. Walker was taken into custody later Friday. Authorities have not released the student’s name, age or grade, and the public case filings reviewed by local outlets did not provide a detailed account of how the allegations were reported to police.

Asheboro City Schools said Walker had worked as a school counselor at Asheboro High School since Feb. 26, 2018, and was no longer employed effective May 8, the same day she was arrested. Photos previously posted by the school also identified her as a coach. “Because this is a personnel matter and may involve an active law enforcement process, Asheboro City Schools will not comment further,” the district said in a statement. The district said it remained committed to the safety and well-being of students and staff and would continue to cooperate with authorities.

Walker appeared virtually Monday in Randolph County court. Prosecutors asked that she be held without bond, while defense attorney Brian Walker argued she was not a flight risk. He told the court she lives in Guilford County and has family ties in the area, including her parents and a young child. The judge noted that the charges are considered violent offenses under Iryna’s Law, which affects the type of release a defendant may receive. Bond was set at $50,000.

The charges are accusations, and Walker is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Local court coverage said a conviction could carry a prison sentence of up to 94 months. Police have not announced whether additional charges are expected. Investigators also have not said whether they are reviewing school records, electronic communications, surveillance footage or witness statements as part of the case. The limited information released so far has focused on the date of the alleged conduct, the location and the charges filed.

The case places the school district in the middle of both a criminal investigation and a personnel matter. District officials did not release details about Walker’s job duties beyond confirming her role as a counselor and her employment dates. Asheboro High School is part of Asheboro City Schools, which serves students in central North Carolina. The school remained open after the arrest, and officials did not announce any broader threat to students or staff. The district’s public statement said further comment would be limited because law enforcement work may still be active.

The next scheduled step is Walker’s court date on May 26. Police said no other details had been released as of Monday night, and the student’s identity remained protected. The criminal case is expected to move through Randolph County court as investigators and prosecutors review the evidence.
