Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot and injured during an attempted robbery in San Francisco on Saturday. The 23-year-old first-round draft pick was reportedly accosted by a thief attempting to steal his Rolex watch in Union Square around 3:37 p.m. as he was en route to a signing event on Geary and Market Street.
The incident escalated into a physical altercation, during which Pearsall was shot in the chest. The suspect was also injured during the struggle. Both Pearsall and the suspect were transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment.
The 49ers organization confirmed that Pearsall is in serious but stable condition. San Francisco Mayor London Breen expressed concern for Pearsall and his family, promising to provide updates as they become available. The suspect was apprehended and is currently in police custody, with charges pending.
Footage from the scene, obtained by local news outlet KTVU, shows Pearsall shirtless and clutching his chest as he is assisted by first responders. A security guard in Union Square reported seeing a man, believed to be the robber, fleeing into a nearby store carrying bags. The incident caused panic in the area, with bystanders fleeing in fear.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott condemned the violence, stating that such acts will not be tolerated in the city. He wished Pearsall a speedy recovery and assured that his department will do everything in its power to ensure justice is served.
Pearsall, a former player for Arizona State University and the University of Florida, was selected 31st overall by the 49ers in this year’s draft. He had an impressive 65-catch, 965-yard 2023 season with the Gators. Pearsall had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury and had only recently resumed practice with his new team when the shooting occurred.
