A tragic incident unfolded in Westchester County when a retired New York Police Department detective fatally shot his wife before taking his own life, while their three children were present in the home, according to local law enforcement. Sean O’Neill, 54, reportedly discharged multiple rounds at his wife, Arlene O’Neill, a 47-year-old fifth-grade teacher, before shooting himself in the head. The incident occurred shortly after 7 a.m. following a dispute, Yonkers police reported.
Emergency services arrived on the scene and attempted to save Arlene O’Neill, but she was declared dead at the location. The couple’s three children were in the house at the time of the incident but were physically unscathed. They are now under the care of other family members, as per the police statement.
Arlene O’Neill was a respected educator at Anne Hutchinson School in the Eastchester Union Free School District, where all three of the couple’s children are enrolled. The district superintendent, Ronald D. Valenti, communicated the tragic news to parents.
The Eastchester Union Free School District expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident. The district has activated its crisis team and has also sought assistance from neighboring districts, including Bronxville and Southern Westchester BOCES, to provide support to students, faculty, and staff as they grapple with the tragic news, Valenti stated in his letter.
Sean O’Neill had a distinguished career in law enforcement, retiring as a detective last year. He joined the NYPD in 1993 and served in the Joint Terrorism Task Force, a collaborative effort between the NYPD and the FBI.
