A tragic accident in Greece claimed the life of a pregnant teacher from California last month. Clara Thomann, a 33-year-old science teacher at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, was vacationing in the Greek Islands when she slipped and fell approximately 164 feet down a gorge near Plakias, Crete on December 23. Reports indicate that first responders, aided by a group of construction workers, quickly transported her to a local hospital in Rethymno.
Thomann, who was six months pregnant with her first child, was conscious and alive when she arrived at the hospital, according to her family. However, she succumbed to her injuries a few days later. She had suffered multiple fractures to her chest and skull, which ultimately led to brain death. Her unborn child, whom she had named Theodoro Clari Thomann, also did not survive the fall.
Thomann’s family flew to Greece to be by her side during her final moments. They remembered her as a loving individual who enjoyed teaching and helping others. “Clara was always there for her family and friends and would want us all to gather, hold each other tight, and celebrate,” they shared.
Following her death, Thomann and her unborn child were transported to Athens for cremation. Her partner, Elliot Finn, intends to scatter her ashes at various locations in Greece and Turkey. Finn shared his grief and memories of Thomann, stating that they had been celebrating her life by hiking to beaches and collecting shells and rocks.
Thomann, who was an organ donor, also left a lasting legacy by donating her heart, liver, and pancreas to those in need. Her family reiterated her love for helping and teaching others.
The loss of Thomann has deeply affected her school community. Dos Pueblos Principal Bill Woodard expressed his sorrow, stating, “There are no words to describe the sadness we are all feeling. Ms. Thomann was so kind and such a great teacher who loved her students and loved science. Our hearts break for her family and for all of us who are feeling this loss.”
Parents of Thomann’s students also paid tribute to her, with many calling her their child’s favorite teacher. The family plans to hold a memorial service for Thomann when they return to the United States at the end of the month.
