Virginia State Police are investigating the death of Blue, a Charlottesville tracking dog who had served with the department since 2023.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating after Charlottesville Police Department K-9 Blue was found unresponsive inside a department vehicle at his handler’s home in Greene County and was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Charlottesville police announced Blue’s death Aug. 17, saying he was discovered inside the police vehicle on the evening of Aug. 16. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office is investigating the circumstances. Authorities have not publicly announced a cause of death or explained how long Blue had been in the vehicle before he was found.
The Police Department said it is withholding additional information while the state investigation continues. Officials have not said what happened before Blue became unresponsive, whether the vehicle was running or what equipment inside the vehicle was operating at the time. No official finding has established that heat, a mechanical problem, negligence or another factor caused his death.
Blue specialized in tracking for the Charlottesville Police Department. The department’s K-9 unit page identifies Officer Darius Nash as Blue’s handler. Local television station WVIR reported that Blue joined the agency as a four-month-old puppy in 2023. Police records list tracking as his primary assignment.
Charlottesville’s K-9 unit uses trained police dogs for specialized law enforcement work. Department reports say K-9 teams can be used to track people, help locate vulnerable or kidnapped individuals and assist with evidence searches. Other dogs assigned to the unit have performed explosives-detection and apprehension duties.
In announcing Blue’s death, Charlottesville police described K-9 partners as working animals that are also considered members of the department family. The agency said their dogs are trained to work alongside officers while serving the community and acknowledged that Blue’s death was being felt throughout the department.
The department also asked the community to keep Blue’s handler and his family in their thoughts. Police said information about arrangements honoring Blue would be released when available. The agency did not announce any administrative action involving the handler in its public statement.
The circumstances surrounding Blue’s death remain under investigation by Virginia State Police. Charlottesville police said it plans to release additional information when doing so will not interfere with the inquiry. As of Aug. 21, officials had not publicly released a final cause of death or announced findings determining what led to Blue being found unresponsive in the vehicle.
