Melissa Jubane, a 32-year-old nurse from Oregon, was found dead on Saturday after disappearing just days after her wedding in Hawaii. Jubane, who worked at St. Vincent Hospital in Southwest Portland, was reported missing when she failed to show up for her morning shift on September 4, according to the Beaverton Police Department.
Concerned friends and family requested a welfare check at Jubane’s apartment. Upon arrival, the police, accompanied by the apartment complex staff, found no trace of the newlywed. Jubane had recently married Bryan Llantero in Haleʻiwa, O’ahu, Honolulu on August 24.
Llantero last communicated with his wife around 6 a.m. on the day she was reported missing. Attempts by officers and family members to reach Jubane throughout the day were unsuccessful, as her phone appeared to be off. Additionally, a review of her bank and credit card records provided no clues to her whereabouts. Her sudden disappearance without any communication was deemed unusual and alarming by the police.
Jubane and Llantero, who first met in Hawaii, had been dating for over a decade before getting engaged last year in Oahu. With no leads on Jubane’s location, she was officially listed as a missing person just after 3 p.m. on September 4.
Jubane’s remains were discovered on Friday evening, more than two days after the wellness check and her subsequent missing person report. Following an extensive investigation, the police arrested Jubane’s 27-year-old neighbor, Bryce Johnathan Schubert, on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance. Schubert, who had worked as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023, was charged with second-degree murder.
The police have not disclosed further details, citing the need to maintain the integrity of an ongoing investigation. The department expressed its gratitude to community members who assisted in the search for Jubane and extended its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and coworkers.
Jubane and Llantero had married on August 24 and celebrated with friends and family the following day. They had traveled to Washington State on September 1 to spend Labor Day with Jubane’s family before she returned to her Oregon apartment on September 2. Jubane’s mother-in-law revealed that she stayed at the apartment due to its proximity to her workplace.
Providence St. Vincent Hospital expressed its shock and grief over the tragic news, describing Jubane as an exceptional nurse who will be greatly missed. A coworker, Zachary Horton, paid tribute to Jubane on Facebook, expressing his relief that her whereabouts were finally known and hoping her family would find solace in the coming weeks and years.
